I’m going to read you 2 Corinthians 3:3.
And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.

Anytime I hear this passage I think about a poem by Arthur McPhee. Here it is:

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
Are read by more than a few,
But the one that is most read and commented on
Is the gospel according to you.
You are writing a gospel, a chapter each day
By the things that you do and the words that you say,
Men read what you write, whether faithless or true,
Say, what is the gospel according to you'
Do men read His truth and His love in your life,
Or has yours been too full of malice and strife'
Does your life speak of evil, or does it ring true'
Say, what is the gospel according to you'

Here is why I think this is so important. I realize as a pastor, how little many people really read their Bibles and study scripture. I know that, good or bad, this verse, and poem, are true. Think about a little history. This is how the Gospel spread early on. Jesus dies and is resurrected in 33AD. The Gospels are commonly thought to have been written down between 70-100, that’s 40-70 years later. The church is only growing by word of mouth. For the next 300ish years there are just copies of individual books circulating around for the most part.
The major leaders got together to help give the church structure and guidance. The council of Nicea in 325 and the 1st council of Constantinople in 381 finalized which books would be in the New Testament. Keep in mind, these were 27 individual books.
In 400 Jerome complied them all and translated them from Greek and Hebrew into latin. It was called the Latin Vulgate. This is the first known time the Bible as we know it was together in one book. This was pretty much just for Monks and priests because copies were still rare since they had to be copied by hand.
It wasn’t till the printing press was invented in the west that the 180 copies of the Gutenberg Bible were printed in 1455.
Then 2 early english versions were printed in the 1500’s before The King James version was printed in 1611 and became widely popular.

So for 1500 years, the most common Gospel people read was the hearts of Christians. Now many of us have multiple copies of the Bible, often in different translations. This is great, but we cannot underestimate the value of the way we share the Gospel by the way we live... whether faithless or true, the gospel according to you. What does your life proclaim about the Good News of Jesus Christ? Do people see the truth and love of Jesus in your life? Hope? Peace? Joy? Grace?
I encourage you to take some time every day and get to know Jesus better, and let the light of God shine forth from your life.
